A new database for Rails
Over the past eight months, I’ve been building BicDB, a Rust-based database with PostgreSQL-compatible interfaces, full-text search, vectors, queues, and more. I relied heavily on AI coding agents (Claude and OpenAI), alongside roughly 1,200 hours of my own time.
It’s now powering our applications, including a search engine with over 2 billion documents. We also switched our Gitlab server to BicDB.
It’s still in beta, but it’s been quite a journey. I’d love to hear what fellow Ruby developers think, especially about using it with Rails.
