Exclusive programming community?
I got an idea today about starting an exclusive programming community</a>. I share my thoughts on the subject, but wanted to get some feedback. Good idea? Bad idea?
Made a library? Written a blog post? Found a useful tutorial? Share it with the Ruby community here or just enjoy what everyone else has found!

Bad idea. Really bad idea. see my comment on the post.
it sucks
JUST LOVE THE IDEA!!!! Take something free and open source, rip it out of the hands of the community who built it. Wall it, fence it off, guard it and protect it from the mob and turn it into something exclusive, limited and elitist! Hopefully we make ridiculous huge profit by feeding the public our crumbs!
Drop me a mail as soon as possible so we can get started!!!
I don’t think Ruby has enough of a reputation for having users that are condescending and elitist, so this is definitely a good idea. Just forming an informal group of like-minded developers doesn’t have that necessary element of… douchiness, I suppose, that this idea has. Best to form an official group of the cream-of-the-crop and make sure that the stupid among us don’t bother you.
So yeah, agree with Anonymous bastard, except unlike him I’m probably not nearly stellar enough to join up, so I guess I’ll just continue trying not to drool all over myself.
Sounds a bit like Caboose to me. In the past, I’ve used the Caboose IRC channel in this way.
Perhaps there’s room to add an extra category to RubyFlow - an Ask RubyFlow sort of thing. Wouldn’t appear in the main feed, but solely for people here who want to ask other Rubyists questions. Stack Overflow vaguely offers this already, but not in a Ruby community mould.
It’s an interesting article, and I think a good idea if the execution is appropriate. I agree with Melvin Ram, another poster on your site. See my comments there.
What a surprise! I can’t believe the people calling people douche bags, and acting like douche bags, remain anonymous. Next time you want to try and be slick with your sarcastic remarks, try reading the post first, because you completely missed the point. Even better, if you can’t understand something, don’t comment on it. My post had absolutely nothing to do with walling up a community and acting “holier than thou”. It was simply an idea to provide a private resource to ask difficult questions. Then again, had you of actually read the post you would know this.
Peter, also, I apologize for asking this question on the here. I thought it would stimulate an intelligent discussion, where people could relate and possibly fill a void in the ruby community. At the very least, have a mature discussion. I was not expecting to bring out the anonymous douche bags with their snide remarks. If you want, you can delete this post.
I’m a bit surprised by the vitriol, too, but it’s been one of those days (Matt Aimonetti is getting a ton of shit for some presentation slides he put up earlier) ;-) And don’t forget all the bad vibes people had for the “Rails Maturity Model” proposed by Obie Fernandez. People just like an excuse to let loose with some vitriol without feeling too bad about themselves.
wait a sec, so you’re saying you want a community where the elite in the ruby community can get their questions answered? so you’re advocating for a community you wouldn’t be a part of since you’re not really a “great programmer” IMO? (I’ve read the authlogic source. unimpressive.)
stupid idea, plus the most interesting and talented people I’ve ever met in programming were through totally random ways and not at some elite private board some of them would probably not consider themselves “elite” even though they have their PhD and an otherworldly ability to optimize x86 machine code
anyhow, IRC is good enough, and open to everybody - god save us from having to answer one stupid noob question in the midst of all the decent ones.
(I’ve read the authlogic source. unimpressive.)
C’mon man, that’s just mean :)
Yeah its pretty easy to make comments on here and not post your name. How convenient that I cant go on your site or see some of your code. To be honest, I really don’t care what you think about Authlogic, nor do I care what kind of code you write, who is better than who, etc. I find it amusing you just tell me the code is unimpressive yet you can’t tell what is unimpressive about it. It couldn’t be that you are being an ass and trying to piss me off? Oh wait…
First of all, I took the word elite out of the post, including this one, for obvious reasons. I apologize for that and it was an unintentional mistake. Again, had you of read the post you would know that. I wasn’t referring to the word elite for myself, and no I never said I was elite. I was trying to make a point, and put myself in the shoes of people like Ezra and Matz. I was trying to make a point that there is a void in the ruby community for getting advanced questions answered. That’s all.
Your last comment makes no sense either. I have no problem with people asking questions, but there is more than “one” question on the forum: http://www.ruby-forum.com/forum/3. Go post a complicated / advanced question on there and let me know how it goes.
Off topic, but if you can’t handle anonymous criticism or flames, I think it is you who should do some growing up. Or at the very least, learn what this internet thing is all about and embrace it rather than crying about it. Some people think your idea is sound, others think it sucks. Deal with it.
I never said anyone should grow up…but I agree with you, I don’t expect everyone to agree with me. Thank you for the pep talk.
A common quote I’ve been reading hearing lately is “Its better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission.”
If you want this community then go make it. Customizing a pre-packaged social networking platform wouldn’t take much time, its just a matter of getting the word out there.
On a less positive note, this already exists through blogs, forums, wikis and code snippet sites. It would take far less time to Google the issue and find a solution that seems logical to you. Plus, there are soon to be far too many membership based services already.
Yeah, this already exists in a few places that others have named (caboose and offrails and others). Contrary to all the sqawking about how this idea sucks, it’s nice because the signal to noise ratio is very low. People are on the same level and can hold a civil, technical conversation without some fanboy bursting in or feeling like they’re alienating half the channel.
Say what you will, but I compare it less to “omgsupersekrit” like Scientology and more to the community, friends among friends feeling of the TV sitcom Cheers.
Ben - ignore the flamers. I think I know where you’re coming from. Certainly no harm in starting a debate :)
I can’t figure out how to post an article to this site. Everything I try to submit is invalid. Even an article on metaprogramming with ruby! http://www.docunext.com/blog/2011/05/metaprogramming-with-ruby.html
