Nginx + HaProxy gotcha

I’ve recently switched from using a straight up Apache mod_proxy + mongrel setup to Nginx + HaProxy + mongrel. Here's a brief overview of why, along with a gotcha I ran into, with a solution.
What?
RubyFlow is a community driven Ruby links site. Items are not added automatically, but chosen and summarized by the community, resulting in a higher quality of links than social bookmarking sites.
International Versions
Russian: rubyflow.ru
Japanese: There is a Japanese version of RubyFlow available, thanks to Makoto Kuwata!
Chinese: Chinese Rubyflow site.
Dutch: Dutch (nederlandse) Rubyflow site.
